Coatings are usually installed in two stages: a base coat and a final top coat.  Granules are often embedded into the final coat and offer added protection against mechanical and ultra-violet damage in the coating surface.  An SPF roof, like most other systems will expand and contract during different climate conditions. It is very important that the protective coating be able to expand and contract with the SPF, a characteristic know as elongation, to avoid serious damage such as cracks or delamination.  Your contractor can help you properly match the SPF and coating system for your project and climate. In time, these coatings, just like the paint on your house, can be cleaned and re-applied to keep your SPF roof system in peak performance for decades.

The most common types of cool roof coatings used over SPF are: acrylic, silicone and polyurea and are light or white in color.  Some contractors install a thin layer of granules spread over the foam, providing an even longer lasting system.  Coatings can be spray applied as a single or plural component system.  The various materials all have different physical properties and vary in cost.  Contact Smart Choice Insulation & Roofing, Inc. for more details.

Protective Coatings for SPF roofs

SPF requires protection from the sun's ultra-violet radiation. This coating helps to protect the foam from the sun's UV rays.  Once the SPF has been applied to the proper thickness and finish specifications, a protective layer of elastomeric coating and granules is applied. This protective layer produces a durable weather resistant surface. An SPF roof is strong and sustainable, requiring minimal maintenance and provides exceptional leak-free service.
